How does Osartil 25mg Tablet work?

Losartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a chemical in your body that causes blood vessels to tighten. This relaxation of blood vessels lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Indication of Osartil 25mg Tablet

1. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Losartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.
2. Renal Protection in Diabetes: It helps protect the kidneys from damage in patients with diabetes.
3. Stroke Risk Reduction: Losartan is used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Pharmacology

The first orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker that is not a peptide is losartan potassium. It binds to the AT1 receptor, which is found in many tissues (including the heart, kidneys, adrenal gland, and vascular smooth muscle), and inhibits several vital biological processes, such as vasoconstriction and the synthesis of the hormone aldosterone, which is responsible for hypertension.

Potassium losartan is used to treat hypertension. It can be taken either on its own or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs (eg. thiazide diuretics).

In hypertensive type 2 diabetics with proteinuria—defined as urine albumin to creatinine ratio of more than 300 mg/g—losartan potassium is recommended as a treatment to halt the progression of renal damage.

Dosage & Administration of Osartil 25mg Tablet

• Usual Dose for Adults: Start with 50 mg once daily. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 100 mg daily, either as a single dose or divided into two doses.
• Patients with Volume Depletion: Start with 25 mg once daily.
• Administration: This can be taken with or without food. Take at the same time each day for the best effect.

Interaction

• Potassium Supplements/Diuretics: Avoid potassium-sparing diuretics and potassium supplements unless advised by your doctor.
• NSAIDs: Can reduce the antihypertensive effect of Losartan and increase the risk of renal impairment.
• Lithium: Losartan can increase lithium levels, leading to toxicity.

Contraindications

Do not take Losartan if you are allergic to it.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Losartan Potassium is classified as Pregnancy Category D. The risk to the fetus increases if administered during the second or third trimesters. It is unknown if Losartan Potassium is excreted in human milk. Given that many drugs are excreted in breast milk and the potential for adverse effects on the nursing infant, a decision should be made to either discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, considering the drug's importance to the mother.

Precautions & Warnings

Using Osartil during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy can impair fetal renal function, leading to increased fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In patients with intravascular volume depletion, such as those on high-dose diuretics, symptomatic hypotension may occur. Plasma concentrations of Osartil are significantly higher in cirrhotic patients. Renal function changes, including renal failure, have been reported in patients with renal impairment.
